Mission Statement: The Schineatha Scholarship Fund is dedicated to empowering nontraditional students at Texas Southern University (TSU) through financial support, mentorship, and community engagement, with a focus on fostering leadership in civic engagement, healthcare advocacy, and environmental sustainability.
Nontraditional students often face unique challenges, including financial constraints, balancing education with work or family responsibilities, and navigating academic environments that may not fully accommodate their needs. The Schineatha Scholarship Fund aims to address these challenges by providing financial support, industry-specific mentorship, and opportunities for meaningful community service.
How does the fund work?
-
Applicants must be nontraditional students who will be juniors at TSU in fall of 2025. This includes, but is not limited to: students with severe disabilities, first-generation college students, adults returning to complete their degrees, transfer students, and veterans.
-
Students will submit essays, transcripts, and projected course plans for consideration. A team of volunteers will review applications, and selected candidates will be interviewed before final decisions are made. Applications are due 31 March 2025.
-
The inaugural cohort members will be announced summer 2025.
-
Students will receive a stipend of $1,000 at the beginning of their junior year to support the purchase of books and school supplies.
Mentors, drawn from various industries aligned with the students' goals, will be working with the students throughout their senior year.
-
Each cohort will collaborate on a volunteer project during their junior year, led by a cohort leader who is an established professional in the workforce. The project will focus on promoting civic engagement, healthcare advocacy, or environmental sustainability.
Vision Statement: To build a legacy of educated, socially conscious, and resilient leaders who make a lasting difference in their communities and beyond.
